ETHICAL AND LINGUISTIC FUNDAMENTS OF MODERN CULTURE. APEL’S DEFENCE OF THE MODERNITY PROJECT
The paper is devoted to the reconstruction of Karl-Otto Apel’s conception from the historical perspective; it also presents the most important controversies in which the conception is involved today. What is at stake is the description of Apel’s road from transcendental-pragmatic ethics of discourse to macroethics of responsibility within the context of remembrance of “the German catastrophe”, the events of 1968 and transformations of political geography of Europe of recent years, as well as – more generally – within the context of challenges that philosophy faces due to development of the contemporary technoscience. In the period of cultural transformations described as “postmodern” Apel’s conception seems to be an attempt to save the structure of culture that is forever a thing of the past. I would rather see the tropicality of the conception in its reference to contemporary politics which is “doomed” to combine “ethics of beliefs” with “ethics of responsibility”.
