Nowadays, aesthetics of nature is an important field of philosophical aesthetics. Its proponents unanimously claim that aesthetic experience is important in so far as ecology is concerned and, thus, that aesthetics of nature has consequences for environmental ethics. The aim of the article is to analyze the idea of aesthetic experience as it is discussed by environmental aesthetics and to show that aesthetic experience of nature conceived of as sensual experience of nature qua nature (or a sensual experience in which nature is experienced “on its own terms”) is identical with an ethical approach to nature which allows one to discover nature as an other-than-human realm which cannot be valued only in instrumental terms.
