In this paper I argue that it is an oversimplification to describe forgiveness as a single act in which the victim decides to stop resenting her wrongdoer. On the account offered in the paper, forgiveness is a process with many aspects and constituents, and it can take different forms. The unilateral forgiveness is a cognitive and emotional process during which the victim comes to terms with the wrong done to her. It leads to the attitude of openness towards the wrongdoer. The bilateral forgiveness is a process in which the victim’s relationship with the wrongdoer is being repaired; it requires cooperation and mutual respect. If reconciliation is the aim of both parties and if they are prepared to accept the truth about the wrong done, it becomes possible to restore trust and overcome the crisis in the relationship.
