In this paper, following a clarification of the concept of self, I critically reflect on the concept of personal autonomy as analyzed in the so-called ‘hierarchical’ model, in order to propose some amendments to the notions of self-identification and self-evaluation, which are of central importance to this model. The main result of my proposal is the substitution of the concept of extreme personal autonomy by that of caring about oneself — that is to say, the replacement of an extremely autonomous view by a moderately heteronomous view of personal autonomy.
