The theses of Bernard Williams’s paper Internal and External Reasons are sometimes dismissed as too trivial to be of any consequence, and sometimes rejected as almost too dangerous to be true. The truth, as always, lies somewhere in the middle. Williams does have something important to tell us, but it is not going to turn our moral universe upside down. It can, on the contrary, give it more solid foundations.
