Since the beginning of metaethics one hundred years ago linguistic investigations have played a crucial role in the choice of metaethical theory. The purpose of the paper is to present and explain the most important aspects of the development of metaethical investigations. It is claimed that the main prob¬lem of metaethics must be conceived of in a broader way than M. Smith suggested. For this purpose, following M. Timmons and T. Horgan, two criteria for a plausible metaethical theory are presented: the criterion of coherence and that of experience. Additionally, the characteristics of moral language and other psychological, epistemological, and ontological phenomena which shape the contemporary metaethical debate are discussed. Their significance is shown in the discussion of a number of the most influential metaethical debates.
