Abstract

Ethics of care develops a theory of generalized care on the basis of natural (biological) caring practices. But because of its reliance on naturalism (the position that nature is the source of ontological, ethical, and political order), it often presents a narrow vision both of femininity and of care, which applies only to humans. What is more, the adoption of the care for a child as a paradigm causes the ethics of care to become an example of reproductive futurism (a Lee Edelman’s term) –a phantasmatic take on the political understood as a uniform whole represented by the figure of the Child. In order to show that the ethics of care does not have to be naturalist, I try to confront this ethics with Donna Haraway’s appeal to limit reproduction as part of solidarity with non-human beings, as well as with the motive of the care of a child that is not human –“monstrous motherhood” –present in Octavia Butler’s novels;thus, I sketch the contours of a non-anthropocentric ethics of care.
