Abstract

On the basis of the analysis of the selected narrations in the debate on the Anthropocene, the article asks about the identity and shape of environmental ethics in the 21st century. Does “the turn to the Anthropocene” transform our understanding of the care for nature? The text shows that Earth system science (localizing the so-called planetary boundaries) enables us to identify original ethical problems. Most important among them are: the problem of irreversible loses, such as the loss of nature, control, and controllability, and the problem of the irrational shortsightedness characterizing human moral perspectives. The article poses two additional questions: 1) is the management of loss our only way of caring for nature in the Anthropocene? and 2) to what extent does the ethics of postnature remain anthropocentric?
