Feminism and Phenomenology in the Context of the Exploration or the Construction of Female Identity

Authors

Abstract

Contemporary phenomenology affects feminist thought significantly. Connections between feminism and phenomenology may be traced in such topics as corporeality, identity, and the encounter with the Other. Interpreting phenomenology from the point of view of contemporary feminist theory enables an inspiring reading of both theories. Moreover, it sheds new light on phenomenology. On the other hand, feminism may treat phenomenology as a method to reach the essence of femininity due to the fact that phenomenology is a way of thinking through the exploration and description of source experiences. In the article I pose the question: is the phenomenological starting point useful for the feminist description of gender?
