The paper argues that, contrary to his own words, Sidgwick identified not two but three ultimate methods: intuitionism, egoism and impartialism, which demand equal treatment of similar cases. It is claimed against Sidgwick that there are many possible substantive systems of morality and that egoism is just one of them. The principle of impartiality is common to all such systems, being the basis for unity rather than for dualism of practical reason.
