Abstract

The paper aims (1) to outline the main tenets of metaethical expressivism, with special emphasis on the differences and similarities between expressivism and traditional emotivism; (2) to present fundamental theses of the most sophisticated version of contemporary expressivism, i.e. Allan Gibbard’s theory, including his view on the place of moral sentiments in the analysis of moral judgments; (3) to discuss Gibbard’s application of expressivism to the metatheory of meaning and its metaethical ramifications, especially for the relation between expressivism and non-naturalism.
